“Alila Hotels has shared an update on their green initiatives. Green Globe, an international benchmarking and certification program for the travel and tourism industry, is managed by EC3 Global, a subsidiary of the Sustainable Tourism Co-operative Research Centre, based in Australia. This program is rooted in the Agenda 21 principles for Sustainable Development, which were endorsed by 182 Heads of State at the United Nations Rio Earth Summit in 1992.

Alila Villas Hadahaa in the Maldives was designed and built with sustainability in mind, earning the resort the Green Globe ‘Building, Planning, and Design Standard’ Certification—the first of its kind in the Maldives. Julian Moore, General Manager of Alila Villas Hadahaa, expressed pride in the certification, highlighting that it raises the standard for environmental consciousness in the region and reinforces the commitment to preserving the stunning but fragile environment of the Maldives. The certification also serves as motivation to continue safeguarding the destination for future generations.

The resort’s architect, Chan Soo Khian, who was trained at Yale and is based in Singapore, successfully blended innovative architecture with environmental considerations. The resort’s design, while contemporary, incorporates many natural materials from the region, such as coconut, timber, and coral stones. The villas and facilities are infused with Maldivian cultural elements and are carefully integrated into the natural landscape.

Chan also implemented rainwater harvesting, waste treatment plants, and designed high-roofed areas with open ceilings to enhance cross ventilation in indoor spaces. Additionally, deep roof overhangs and shaded windows were installed to reduce energy consumption. Construction of the jetty and Aqua Villas was carefully timed with extreme low tides to minimize silt disturbance, further reducing the environmental impact.

Alila Villas Hadahaa is committed to setting new environmental standards, even before its official opening, and intends to maintain these standards as it becomes fully operational.
