A Grand Renovation Transforms The Ritz-Carlton San Francisco

“Located in San Francisco’s upscale Nob Hill neighborhood, The Ritz-Carlton, San Francisco—a neo-classic landmark for 105 years—has just completed a comprehensive renovation. The transformation was led by Hirsch Bedner Associates (HBA), the world’s largest hospitality design firm, which retained the hotel’s classic architectural style while infusing it with modern details.

Inspired by the colors of San Francisco Bay, the Pacific Ocean, and the city’s famous fog, the 336 guest rooms, including 60 suites, have been updated with a palette of steel blues and grays. The furnishings are influenced by couture fashion and men’s tailoring, with curtain cords resembling belts and chairs upholstered in tweed fabric, paying homage to the sophisticated gentleman.

“The new guestroom design draws inspiration from San Francisco’s iconic luxury department store, Wilkes Bashford, and the legacy of former Mayor Willie Brown, known for his stylish suits,” says Kathleen Dauber, HBA’s Principal Designer. This theme is reflected in the specially woven pillows and the layered wall coverings found in both guest rooms and corridors.

The renovation of the guest rooms is the final phase of the hotel’s extensive makeover, which began with the reopening of its signature restaurant, Parallel 37, in December 2011. This was followed by the unveiling of the lobby and The Lounge in February 2012, and the completion of new meeting spaces and a ballroom in September 2014.

The hotel’s updated interiors combine contemporary design with high-tech amenities, such as Virtual Concierges in the lobby and meeting space foyers, which provide guests with maps, attractions, and event information. This modern touch contrasts with the hotel’s historic exterior, originally built in 1909.

Situated in the heart of downtown, near the Financial District, Chinatown, and Union Square’s luxury shopping, this nine-story hotel occupies an entire block of Stockton Street. It is the only AAA Five Diamond Hotel in San Francisco and offers over 23,000 square feet of meeting space.”
